General Information
Before the league was founded in 1966, there are some records that show that some local competitions were held in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Before the official inauguration, Turkey had the Turkish Basketball Championship from 1946-1967.

The league’s first official match was played in 1966 and Altinordu was the champion of the debut season. Three years after the inauguration, the TBL was introduced as the second-tier league, and since 2011, the country even has a third-tier league named TB2L.

There are 16 teams in Basketbol Super Ligi competing for the No.1 spot. At the end of each season, the top 8 teams are competing in the playoffs and the winner is crowned as a Turkish Champion. The bottom two teams, however, are relegated to the TBL and the two best teams from the TBL are promoted to the Basketball Super League.

Most Decorated Teams
Anadolu Efes, Fenerbahce, and Eczacibasi are the 3 most decorated teams in the league’s history. Eczacibasi is on the third spot with 8 Championships (their last one was 1989), Fenerbahce is second with 9 titles, and Anadolu Efes is the most decorated team with 14 titles. Their most recent one was in 2019.
Elsewhere on the list, we have Galatasaray and ITU with 5 titles, Ulker has 4. Besiktas, Tofas, and Karsiyaka have 2 Championships, while Altinordu and Muhafizgucu have 1. It is interesting to mention that Anadolu Efes has been a runner-up more than any other team in the league (12).
